Just How Valuable Is Leadership Development?

Is it correct to assume that opportunities abound? I would have to say, "Yes". I sincerely feel that any person will be able to find a great opportunity, if they so choose. Or, more accurately, if the said person possesses skills needed for that particular opportunity. That is where it gets a little bit confusing. We may be able to clearly see the skills needed for a particular opportunity, but do we possess those skills?

Truly, there is no way to gain all the skills available. It is impossible to be suitable for every profession in the world. That much is true, and this is not meant to challenge that fact. Still, there certainly are attributes that work well no matter what field you may end up in. There must be common traits that successful people share. And surely enough, these common traits do exist. Greatness requires wisdom. Common sense is needed as well. Being able to relate to your fellow men is a prerequisite to greatness. These traits number in the hundreds that going through each one would warrant its own separate article, so this post will focus on an attribute that might appear to be a given, but is actually not all that easy to obtain: Leadership.

There is no arguing that each attribute is as important as all the others, but it would also be safe to say that leadership could possibly be the hardest to achieve. Even upon grasping the idea of leadership, there is no guarantee to sufficient understanding of it. It is not my intention to deride other traits, but the amount of sacrifice required by leadership is definitely great. There is a saying that leaders are born, and I just might have to disagree with that.

Leaders evolve through experience. They endure different circumstances that form the way they think. They confront challenges that set in stone their virtues. For some, the idea of undergoing a leadership development course is a worthwhile investment. Prospective leaders accept the demands that come with being a leader that they consider leadership development as a requirement. Executives with years of experience even attend Executive Leadership Development Programs to further their skills.

Sure, there are persons who just have the knack for being a leader; who show good leadership potential. But until they have that leadership skill development, then their potentials are just that. There is still no substitute for experience.
